Gurlesque, Lesbian Strip Show
Last Sunday (March 12th), it was the long weekend, and I went to see Gurlesque in Melbourne.
Gurlesque is based in Sydney, and that's where they hold most of their shows. Every few months, they come to Melbourne, gather together some of Melbourne's performers as supporting cast, and do one here. Sunday night was no exception. It was enjoyable, raunchy, and very boundary-pushing.
It's not your typical strip show. There are elements of political activism, feminism, gender-bending, and a celebration of the female form - in addition to entertainment, of course.
Entry is restricted to women only, but the organisers are very accommodating and inclusive, and I feel privileged to have been allowed in every time. This time I even went backstage, as I had a couple of friends who were part of the show.
The show was great. There were a few moments of mediocrity - but that's always the case with such a diverse cast and audience. I'm sure that some parts which I liked, someone else would have found them less appealing. Overall, though, the show was quality, and the two stars of the show - Sex Intents and Glitter Supernova are wonderful performers who have really found a niche. They are entertaining and funny, and their experienced spontaniety shines through.
